PandalHopping

চলো, প্যান্ডেলে প্যান্ডেলে!

The pandal hunt of Boldly Pujo. Every day of Pujo, the people who spot the most new pandals in Kolkata that day each win a hoichoi coupon. When it ends, the 6 people with the most across all the days win one too.

Start spotting

It counts at once when the photo and the location check out.

How the hunt works

  1. 1

    Spot a pandal

Stand at the pandal, take a photo with your phone's camera, pick its name. It needs both: the photo, and your phone's location showing you are within 100 m of it. Not on the map? Add it, and it counts once our team has checked it.

  2. 2

    It counts at once

If the photo and the location check out, the stamp is yours on the spot. The team can still remove a spot that breaks the rules, and you see why.

  3. 3

    Win the day

The most new pandals in a day wins that day. The most across all the days wins the season. Each pandal counts once for you.

The rules, plainly

  • Kolkata Durga Pujo pandals only. Pandals on the map count at once. A new pandal you find counts once our team has checked and added it.
  • A winner every day. Each day has its own board, its own number of winners and its own pandals needed to qualify: spot at least that many new pandals that day to be in the running. They are in the table above.
  • New pandals only. A pandal counts once for you, for the whole of Pujo. Your count for a day is the pandals you spotted for the first time that day.
  • The most new pandals wins the day. Ties go to whoever reached that count first. Nobody below the day's pandals needed to qualify can win that day, and a prize nobody qualified for is not given out.
  • The season board. Everything you spot across all the days. You need 30 pandals to qualify, and the 6 people with the most win. Ties go to whoever got there first.
  • One win each. If you win a day you are not in the running for later days or for the season board, and the next person moves up. Your name stays on the boards, marked as a winner.
  • 15 a day at most. At most 15 pandals count for you in one day. A spot past that is still put on the map, but it does not count, that day or later.
  • Midnight is the line. A day is the India-time day, midnight to midnight. A spot belongs to the day our server receives it, so one sent a second before midnight that arrives a second after counts for the new day. Do not leave it to the last minute.
  • A new pandal you add counts for the day you sent it if our team adds it before that midnight. Added later, it counts for the season only.
  • One entry per mobile number. You sign in with a code sent by SMS. Indian numbers only, for now.
  • Every Kolkata spot you send counts. Once you have joined, every pandal you spot in Kolkata is checked against these rules, whichever Spot button you used. If one does not count, your passport says why under its stamp.
  • Camera only. The photo has to be taken at the pandal with your phone's camera, and sent within 10 minutes. Photos from your gallery, downloads and forwards do not count (they still go on the map). This keeps it fair for the people who walked there.
  • No photo twice. A photo already used in another spot, by anyone, is not counted.
  • A photo and a location, both. Location must be switched on for this page when you send. A spot more than 100 m from the pandal is not accepted, and neither is one sent without a location.
  • Your phone must be sure where it is. If it can only say "somewhere within 100 m or more", step into the open, wait a few seconds and send again.
  • Spots count by themselves. A spot counts the moment its photo and location pass. The team looks at spots afterwards and can remove one that breaks the rules, with the reason shown to you. Every winner's spots are checked by a person before a reward is given.
  • Your photo goes on the public Pujo map, like every spot, so the whole city can see what is on tonight.
  • The team has the final say. Fake or repeated photos can remove a person from a board, with the reason shown to them.
  • If you win, your spots are checked by a person first. Then you sign in, tap Claim, and agree that your board name and mobile number may be shared with hoichoi, only to deliver and verify the reward.

What is collected

Your mobile number
To sign you in with an SMS code and keep one entry per person. Never shown to anyone.
The name you pick for the board
Public. Pick anything; it need not be your real name.
The photo, and which pandal it is
Public on the map and, once counted, as a stamp in your hunt.
Where your phone was when you sent it
One pin per spot and how sure the phone was of it, read only while you are sending. Never in the background.
The time, your browser's name and a scrambled network address
Kept with each spot to catch fake or repeated entries. The address is stored hashed, not as it is.
When your phone says the photo was made
The time stamp on the photo file, when the browser gives one, to turn away photos from before the hunt.
Shared with hoichoi
Nothing, unless you win and agree. A winner who taps Claim agrees that their board name and mobile number may be shared with hoichoi, only to deliver and verify the reward. Nobody else's details are shared.
